The Ohio State University maintains a lively community of scholars in the field of music cognition. Roughly 10-15 faculty, graduate students, research staff and post-doctoral fellows belong to the OSU music cognition group. The University supports music cognition through graduate education, research, post-doctoral fellowships, graduate assistantships, and occasional workshops/symposiums.
Music cognition activities at the Ohio State University are supported by the Department of Psychology, the School of Music, the Center for Cognitive Science, and Office of Academic Affairs.
Participants are drawn primarily from the School of Music and the Department of Psychology. However, various faculty from other OSU departments also engage in research related to music cognition -- including faculty from Speech and Hearing Sciences, Linguistics, and Philosophy.
The music cognition group holds regular bi-weekly Reading Group meetings throughout the year. The group reads and discusses recent publications in music psychology, music theory, and related areas. The group involves students, fellows, staff, faculty and visitors.
Guest speakers are regularly invitied to the OSU campus. In the past year, music cognition guest speakers have included Sandra Trehub (University of Toronto, Canada), Nicholas Cook (University of Southampton, England), Carol Krumhansl (Cornell University), and Pirk-Jan Povel (Nijmegen Institute for Information and Cognition, Netherlands). A complete list of recent guest speakers is available.
Although office space is often limited, some space is available to host visiting faculty who might want to spend part of a sabbatical leave at OSU. Preference is given to visitors whose research interests complement or coincide with those of OSU personnel.
